Cape Town
drum group, Beat-it, offers djembe drum lessons to anybody above the age 11. The lessons are, as much as possible, taught through the oral tradition. This is important, because it helps develop listening skills and is the method traditionally used to deliver djembe drum lessons.Drumming lessons:
-
can help achieve reducing stress- allows you to make a noise
- are a meaningful way to fill your pastime
- are a way to experience your whole body
- help you to listen to others.
"The spirit of the drum is something that you feel, but cannot put your hands on. It does something to you from the inside out . . . it hits people in so many different ways.
But the feeling is one that is satisfying and
joyful. It is a feeling that makes you say to yourself: 'I'm glad to be alive today! I'm glad to be part of this world!'"
Babatunde Olatunji (1927-2003)
Cape Town Beat-it's drum emphasis helps people to develop their own djembe drumming circles and communities.
